Media Consumption
General media consumption for teens of today is rather frightening. I
t's often a struggle for parents to keep their children offline for just a few minutes. My personal use of media stretches into the double digits daily.
It starts at 6:30 often when I plug my ears into my iPod and listen to music. I listen to music during the school day for about two hours daily. Immediately after school I once again plug into my iPod, and listen almost continually until 8:00 or 9:00 at night.
From 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm I am at the same time on Facebook or Snapchat communicating with people.
The general consensus with social media is rather negative. That I am wasting time online while I could be socializing with “real” people.
My counter to this is very simple. A legitimate relationship is one that has genuine feelings on each side. With that in mind, and the fact that I am an introvert, and understand that it is far simpler to start a conversation behind a screen rather than in person is far simpler.
Yes, perhaps several hours a day is too much to stare at a screen, but I honestly believe it is not too much if it is for a legitimate friendship.
